Knowing Your Audience & Target
Market
The first thing that you need when you launch a website –
just as you would need when you launch a shop in the real
world – is a product. Once you have a product, you would
need to have a target audience.
When you plan your business, you should find out who are the
people who are most likely to buy your product. Target
audience is those people who you need to attract to your
website because they are most likely to make a purchase. For
example, if you are selling balloons your target audience
would be young mothers and maybe teenagers who love to
party. In order to get the highest ROI (returns on
investment) it is as important that you know who your target
audience is as how to find and attract it.
How do you find that target audience? In the real world a
market research study would serve the purpose. In the
virtual world this research takes different names, but is
more or less the same.
1. What the search engines tell you – organic search
or the search through SERPs (search engine result pages) is
the source of the majority traffic to any website. This
means you would need a high ranking for your website if you
want to attract the most of your target audience. How do you
do that? Use a popular search engine like the Google for
example, and look up how your website fares with pertaining
keywords. Do you get millions of results for that type of
keyword or is it in thousands? Find keywords that have the
least results so you have the least possible competition.
When you do so, you would be able get better ranking and you
could hope to capture high volume of that target audience.
2. Choose your keywords carefully – the all powerful
factor in bringing in target audience is the keyword tool.
You would need to find out how many times the keywords you
choose are being searched on the Net. The higher the number,
the more chances you have to be discovered by those people
who are interested in your product. The best way is to find
a leading niche and then create a sub-niche for yourself
where you sharpen the focus. The sharper that focus is, the
more targeted would be your audience, the higher would be
the chances of conversion.
3. Attracting targeted audience is not limited to online
– while the Internet is your greatest medium for attracting
your audience, it is not limited to its boundaries. Go
offline with your quest for best results. Put your website
on your visiting cards, your stationery, your greeting
cards, etc. Advertise through television, newspapers, and
all other medium which is related to your field. For
example, if it is regarding students, you could advertise on
the cover of notebooks; if it is pertaining to young mothers
you could advertise on the magazines pertaining to this
bracket, etc.
